Twenty-sixth Sunday after Pentecost

This week we are invited to reflect on the question of grief and how to deal with life changing situations and loss. We start with St Elisabeth of Hungary, a 13th century Hungarian princess and philanthropist, who was betrothed to a young man called Louis whom she married in 1221. Elizabeth's life changed irrevocably six years later when, on 11 September 1227, Louis died of a fever in Otranto, Italy, just a few weeks before the birth of their daughter Gertrude. Upon hearing the news of her husband's death, Elizabeth reportedly said, “Louis is dead. It is to me as if the whole world died today”. Following her husband’s death, Elizabeth made solemn vows similar to those of a nun, practiced self-denial and chose poverty over material wealth. She gave food, clothing......:......
