Last Sunday’s first reading from 1 Samuel about a woman called Hannah can be a source of inspiration to those of us who, every now and then, have good reason to keep perspective and remember that even biblical characters are humans who experience grief and make mistakes. Nevertheless, Hannah is certainly a pretty safe bet to emulate because she’s a real, very tough and humble person. She endures emotional pain and yet remains faithful to God the Almighty who ultimately hears her prayer for help and comes to her assistance. 1 Samuel presents Israel as a nation in crisis. The Philistines are threatening, there is full of corruption in the society and even the religious and judicial leaders aren’t much better.
