Third Sunday after Easter

Message from the Rector

After the resurrection our Lord Jesus Christ showed himself to some of his disciples including Mary Magdalene, Cleophas and his friend and fellow pilgrim. In today’s Gospel from John chapter 19, the risen Lord shows himself again to a group of disciples, fishermen, at work by the Sea of Tiberias in the northern province of Galilee. In this small group of fishermen, we encounter Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of Jesus’ disciples. The passage informs us that, ‘Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing’ (John 21: 2-3). This passage from John is rich in imagery. In a story very similar to one in the Gospel of Luke chapter 5: 1-11, we are also told of how Simon Peter, Thomas, Nathanael, Zebedee’s sons, and two other disciples, head back to shore with empty nets after some time fishing.
