Fourth Sunday after Epiphany

‘They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes’ (Mark 1v22).  
 
Jesus’s authority arose from who he was as God’s Son and one who believed in serving others for the sake of the Kingdom of God. He did not command people to work for God’s Kingdom but invited others to follow him as we saw in last Sunday’s gospel where Jesus called four fishermen and said to each one of them, ‘follow me’. His authority to invite and empower his disciples in their work of mission brought many blessings to the people, including healing for the sick. Jesus acted on God’s authority but to many people it was anything but obvious that it was through God’s inspiration and divine love and mercy that health was being given to the sick:......
